Popular Children’s Book now available in IsiXhosa and IsiZulu
Popular kid’s book, The Magic that’s Ours, which has already won acclaim from educators
across the country, is now available in IsiXhosa and IsiZulu, helping to spread its magic message to many more South African kids.
Written by local author Gary Hirson, the fun and vividly-illustrated tale takes its cue from one of Albert Einstein’s beliefs – that imagination and creativity hold tremendous power, perhaps more so than mere knowledge. The Magic That’s Ours,(UMlingo Wethu in IsiZulu and Ummangaliso Wethu in IsiXhosa) helps kids make life-long friends with their imagination.
Through interactive activities in each chapter, creative skills are stimulated with painting, puppet-making and connecting with nature, amongst other“fun-time activities”.
Inspired by the feedback the English version of the book was receiving, Hirson was motivated to bring the book to a much wider South African audience.
“The book’s sequel, The Power that’s Ours, has already been sponsored by corporate companies as part of the CSR initiatives.
This has resulted in thousands of copies being donated to children recovering in hospital and schools in impoverished communities. Hirson is hopeful that with the translation of The Magic that’s Ours into IsiZulu and IsiXhosa, the power of creativity, fun, and self-confidence can be spread to a much broader audience.
“Ideally I would love to reach classrooms across the country in all of our 11 official languages
– but I’m chuffed that we’re on the way there. I strongly believe that stories are good for the mind, and very good for the development of curious little souls too. I’m inspired to spread the magic message across the country.”
