‘We are delighted to have partnered with Calm in Storm on this project,’ says Bronwynn Simons of Student Brands, ‘as a leading student portal we interact with students across the country providing resources, support and the opportunity to excel. We know students are our future and we need to equip them with education, and optimism, as they transition into life after school. This workshop will help them grow and develop as they prepare for their future whether it be at university or the business world.’
SUCCESS ACHIEVED THROUGH GOAL-SETTING – THE WORKSHOP
Successful business leaders and entrepreneurs have one thing in common – setting goals. All agree that initially they had a dream, which led to putting goals and plans in place and then hard work made the dream a reality. Whether it’s Elon Musk, Richard Branson or Steve Jobs, they are quick to admit that there were failures, hiccoughs, and stumbles along the way but that they stuck to their goals and never gave up.
‘It all sounds simple and achievable,’ says Gary Hirson, life coach, motivational speaker, author, and photographer, ‘but the reality is that far too few of us have the real drive or know how, to set the right goals in order pursue our dreams. It is instinctive in some but for most it needs to be learned. When we’re young we have such vivid imaginations and believe we can do anything, it’s a pity we develop self-doubt as we age. But in order to be successful, we need to dream again, to tap into our imagination, to goal set and achieve.’
The importance of goal-setting is the topic of a one-day workshop, aimed at high school learners, gap-year students and young entrepreneurs, which will take them on a step by step journey of self-discovery as they learn how to identify and achieve their goals.
‘I use the analogy of a train journey throughout the workshop, that includes games, discussions, and exercises,’ explains Hirson. ‘The station is the start point, where it is all about the individual, then we stop along the route to overcome hurdles and learn to stay on track until we finally reach our destination, which becomes the desired outcome.
‘It’s really about making our goals realistic and attainable and providing the learners with the skills to identify what they would like to achieve and giving them the tools to make it a reality. They are also given the opportunity to consider their talents, passions, and strengths; to learn how their mind works related to their goals; to strategise, goal set and face obstacles. , Most importantly to learn to believe in themselves.
‘Motivational speaker, Tony Robbins, says it so succinctly: Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible and that’s the aim of the workshop,’ says Hirson. ‘To make goals more tangible and real whether it be improving grades or a career choice. It’s about giving the learners a different perspective about themselves about their self-worth and abilities.’
Facilitated by Gary Hirson of Calm in Storm – a qualified NLP and Transformation Life Coach who regularly appears on SABC 2’s Hectic Nine-9 programme – it is being held in partnership with Student Brands.
