One of the focusses of World Read Aloud Day is to create a movement promoting literacy and the right for every child to be able to read (Huffington Post 2014). This is done by reading aloud, one to one, or to groups and sharing stories.

This year millions of people in more than 100 countries will read aloud in celebration of his day.

So why should we read aloud to someone?

  • Reading to someone can make a difference to them and change their world just by this simple act of loving kindness.
  • By reading aloud to a child every day can assist in helping them to become a lifelong reader which can open their world up to many possibilities.
  • Reading aloud to someone or groups can build a sense of community, creating a common bond via stories, while developing a relationship with the written word.
  • According to a report by Scholastic – reading aloud to children every day puts them a year ahead of children who are not read aloud to.
